Proper subfloor preparation is critical for hardwood installation. The subfloor must be clean, dry, flat (within 3/16″ per 10′), and structurally sound. For concrete subfloors, moisture testing is essential, with readings below 3 lbs/1000 sq ft/24 hrs on a calcium chloride test or below 75% relative humidity. Wood subfloors should have a moisture content of 12% or less. Any high spots should be sanded down, and low spots filled with an appropriate leveling compound.
To determine the amount of flooring needed, measure the length and width of each room in feet, multiply to get the square footage, and add the areas together. For rectangular rooms, simply multiply length by width. For irregular rooms, divide into rectangular sections, calculate each section, and add them together. Once you have the total square footage, add a waste factor: 5-7% for straight installations, 10% for diagonal installations, and 15% for herringbone or other complex patterns. This extra material accounts for cuts, waste, and potential future repairs.
Acclimation periods vary by flooring type: Solid hardwood requires 5-7 days in the installation environment. Engineered hardwood typically needs 48-72 hours. Luxury vinyl generally requires 48 hours, though some click-lock products may need less. Laminate flooring should acclimate for 24-48 hours. Tile and stone don’t require acclimation, but should reach room temperature before installation. Always follow the specific manufacturer’s recommendations for your product, as requirements may vary based on product construction and local climate conditions.
Yes, most luxury vinyl flooring can be installed over radiant heat systems, but with specific requirements. The heating system must be embedded in concrete or a minimum 1/2″ separation from the vinyl. The system should be operational for at least two weeks before installation. During installation, the system should be turned off and the floor temperature should be between 65-70°F. After installation, gradually increase the temperature, never exceeding 85°F at the floor surface. Always check the manufacturer’s warranty and installation guidelines, as some products may have specific requirements or limitations.
Moisture limits for concrete subfloors vary by flooring type: For hardwood, moisture should be below 3 lbs/1000 sq ft/24 hrs (calcium chloride test) or below 75% relative humidity. Luxury vinyl typically allows up to 5 lbs/1000 sq ft/24 hrs or 80% relative humidity. Tile and stone with appropriate waterproof membranes can handle higher moisture levels. Always use appropriate moisture testing methods (calcium chloride test, relative humidity probe, or moisture meter) and follow manufacturer specifications. For high moisture situations, moisture mitigation systems may be required before flooring installation.
